Letter in Support of Funding for the Department of Energy's Vehicle Technologies Office.

Apr 18, 2013 Issues: Energy

Dear Chairman Frelinghuysen and Ranking Member Kaptur:

As you draft the FY14 Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act, we express our support for strong funding for the Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies Office.

This request will fund the program’s ongoing research and development activities, which allow the Department of Energy to partner with industry and academia to conduct pre-competitive research and development activity. This helps lead to high volume commercialization of critical next generation technologies.

There is a global competition right now to determine which countries will produce the cars and trucks of the future. There is no doubt that in the years ahead more Americans will be driving more hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electric vehicles, cars and trucks powered by natural gas, as well as vehicles powered by highly efficient internal combustion engines. The only question is whether these new technologies will be researched, developed, and manufactured here in the United States or overseas.

The Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies Office is working help ensure that the American automobile industry and manufacturing base will continue to be globally competitive, and that we as a nation will not trade our dependence on foreign oil for a dependence on foreign batteries and other emerging technology. Thank you for your consideration of this request.
