Nahrain Hamama Joins Rep. Levin for State of the Union Address
On Tuesday, Nahrain Hamama joined Rep. Levin in attending the annual State of the Union address at the U.S. Capitol. Ms. Hamama’s husband, Sam, is among more than 100 Iraqi Christians from Michigan who were arrested and detained by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement last year. Mr. Hamama lawfully entered the country in 1974 and has four children living in Michigan, but now faces potential deportation by ICE. He is the lead plaintiff in a class action lawsuit, Hamama v. Rep. Levin Attends Trade Talks to Fight the Outsourcing of U.S. Jobs
Rep. Levin travelled to Montreal last week with other Members of Congress to attend the 6th round of renegotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Levin met with trade negotiators from the U.S., Canada and Mexico to highlight the need for any renegotiated NAFTA to address the outsourcing of American jobs caused by the lack of labor rights and resulting low wages in Mexico. Rep. Levin recently led 183 Members of Congress in sending a letter to the United States Trade Representative urging that any new NAFTA have strong, clear and binding provisions that address Mexico’s labor conditions.

This Week on the House Floor:
This week, the House considered the FY 2018 Department of Defense Appropriations Act for the third time since July. The legislation funds only the Department of Defense, ignoring other domestic priorities and investments important to Michigan, and continues an unsustainable piecemeal approach to funding the federal government. The bill also removes the threat of automatic spending cuts but for defense spending only, further squeezing resources for education, the Great Lakes, infrastructure, health research, and other efforts considered important by Michiganders.
The House also met in a joint session for the president’s State of the Union address.
