Rep. Levin Supports Legislation to Curb Gun Violence
The horrific tragedy in Parkland, Florida requires action by Congress like so many other terrible shootings before it. And yet to date, Congressional Republicans have refused to do anything. Rep. Levin strongly supports immediate action on sensible measures to reduce gun violence, including: banning assault weapons, like the one used in Parkland; improving background checks required before the purchase of a firearm; establishing a new Select Committee on Gun Violence to consider other safeguards; and conducting research on firearms safety and gun violence prevention.
Rep. Levin Attends Informational Meeting on Macomb County Community Mental Health Funding
Last Friday, Rep. Levin attended an educational forum on the funding changes to Macomb County Community Mental Health (MCCMH). John Kinch, Executive Director of MCCMH, discussed the most recent policy change from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services that would reallocate Medicaid funds from Macomb County to the westside of Michigan and more rural areas around the state. This redistribution means that Macomb County will lose millions of dollars for mental health services. Kinch asked state legislators to continue to fight for funding for these necessary resources while Rep. Levin echoed this sentiment, urging the state take responsibility for better allocating and providing money for mental health services.
Great Lakes Nature Center Announced in Macomb County
Plans to construct “a world-class freshwater nature center” in Macomb County were announced by the Detroit Zoo’s director last Tuesday. Dubbed the Great Lakes Nature Center, it is expected to be located on the coastline of Lake St. Clair or the Clinton River. The center will host a number of different aquariums and animal habitats and display the ecological diversity and wonders of the Great Lakes. While the exact location has not been chosen yet, construction is set to start this year and finish in 2019. Local county leaders expect the center to draw between 150,000 and 200,000 visitors annually, and serve as an important step towards preserving the region’s ecosystems and highlighting the need to protect the environment.
