Rep. Levin Supports LGBT Rights
This week,  Rep. Levin joined a friend of the Court legal brief  in support of LGBT rights.  The brief argues that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects people who have been discriminated against based on their sexual orientation.  This legal brief goes hand in hand with Rep. Levin’s support for the Equality Act (H.R. 3185), which seeks to protect one’s sexual orientation and gender identity under existing laws.

House Unanimously Passes Rep. Levin’s Child Welfare Legislation
Last week, the House unanimously passed the Family First Prevention Act, bipartisan, bicameral child welfare legislation. The legislation would create a new federal funding stream for evidence-based prevention services - substance abuse treatment, mental health care, and parenting skills interventions - that help keep children out of foster care.

The law is necessary to address inequities in the child welfare funding. Federal funding for prevention services is limited to a small fraction of child welfare spending under current law and the vast majority of child welfare funding is spent on providing out-of-home foster care to low-income children.

The Senate is expected to vote on this bill prior to July 15th.

Supreme Court rules to Protect Women’s Health
Earlier this week, the Supreme Court issued a ruling in Whole Women’s Health v. Texas, overturning a restrictive Texas abortion law. This historic ruling protects the constitutional right to choose, ensuring that women have access to safe and legal abortions should they make the difficult decision to terminate a pregnancy. As a result of this decision, restrictions requiring providers to have hospital admitting privileges and clinics to operate as ambulatory surgical centers will be eliminated throughout Texas, allowing current providers to stay open and paving the way for expanded access. Rep. Levin joined over 120 of his Democratic colleagues in submitting an official statement to the Supreme Court against these burdensome laws. It is imperative that women, regardless of where they live, have access to safe and legal procedures. This decision will help ensure that states cannot place burdensome restrictions on family planning clinics or providers.

Rep. Levin Co-sponsors the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Commemorative Coin Act
Rep. Levin joined 70 members of the House in co-sponsoring this legislation that authorizes the U.S. Treasury to mint commemorative coins celebrating the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor.  The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor pays tribute to the sacrifices of American servicemembers who were killed or wounded in service to our nation and its highest ideals.  The Hall’s mission is to collect, preserve, and share the stories of Purple Heart recipients from all branches of service.  Proceeds from the sale of these coins will be donated to construct additional space at this important site and renovate existing facilities.
