Tele-town hall reminder and updates!

Dear Neighbor,

It was another busy week in Washington continuing our work for the people. We sent legislation to the Senate to establish an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 attack, and we also sent a bill that protects the security of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders after the recent rise in discrimination and violence.

Please scroll down to read more on these bills and several other updates from me!

Bills Passed This Week

S. 937 – COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act

This bill, which was recently signed into law by President Biden on Thursday, responds to the rise in discrimination, hate crimes, and violence against Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders during the COVID-19 pandemic.

H.R. 3233 –  National Commission to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol Complex Act

We must never let the events of January 6th happen again, which is why members of both parties came together in support of this legislation to form a bipartisan, independent commission to investigate the attack.

H.R. 2494 – Veterans’ Education, Transition, and Opportunity Prioritization Plan (VET OPP) Act

My bipartisan VET OPP Act passed the House! As we continue building an economic recovery from the pandemic, we have a responsibility to provide America’s servicemembers with the best resources and opportunities, and my bill is a big step towards fulfilling that responsibility.

The VET OPP Act would create an Economic Opportunity and Transition Administration within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to prioritize transition, education, and employment programs.

Bills I Introduced Recently

Public Land Renewable Energy Development Act (PLREDA)

This week I reintroduced my Public Land Renewable Energy Development Act. This bill would help combat the climate crisis and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels by promoting development of wind, solar, and geothermal energy on public lands. The bill also includes measures to facilitate investment in high quality renewable sources, ensure a fair revenue share for impacted communities, and minimize impacts to wildlife and cultural sites.

Arlington National Cemetery Visit

This week, in honor of the upcoming Memorial Day holiday, I joined my colleagues in paying respects to all our brave fallen servicemembers at Arlington National Cemetery. We owe our servicemembers a great deal of debt for their sacrifice, and I was grateful to honor them at this incredibly meaningful location.

May Constituent of the Month

This month, it's my honor to recognize Jimmy Ukegawa for my May Constituent of the Month! The COVID-19 pandemic has placed numerous burdens on the residents of our district, including a troubling rise in food insecurity. As a third-generation farmer who has been in business for more than three decades, Jimmy is no stranger to the stress of business ups and downs. Last March, after witnessing so many neighbors and friends struggling to make ends meet during the COVID-19 pandemic, Jimmy, his staff, and partners donated more than 500,000 pounds of food to those affected by food insecurity.

Our community is brighter and better because of Jimmy and his staff’s generosity. Thank you Jimmy!
