Center for Effective Lawmaking Rates Rep. Mike Levin One of Most Effective Freshman Lawmakers of 116th Congress
Levin Rated Eighth Most Effective of All House Members on Defense and Veterans Issues
Washington, D.C. – The Center for Effective Lawmaking (CES) released its Legislative Effectiveness Scores (LES) for the 116th Congress and rated Representative Mike Levin (D-CA) as one of the most effective freshman lawmakers. Rep. Levin is sixth on the CES “Exceeds Expectations” category for first-term Members of Congress, and the eighth most effective lawmaker in the House of Representatives on defense and veterans’ issues.
“I came to Congress to be a workhorse, not a show horse, and I’m proud the results bear that out,” said Rep. Levin. “While partisan politics often makes the most headlines, I was able to work with both Democrats and Republicans to pass legislation that will significantly improve the lives of the people I serve, particularly for veterans and military families around Camp Pendleton. Now that the American people are receiving the COVID relief they urgently need, I am confident the 117th Congress will be just as productive.”
The CES score does not include bills Rep. Levin co-led with his Republican colleagues or bills he introduced that were passed as part of larger legislative packages. Overall, Rep. Levin worked with members of both parties to introduce more than 50 pieces of legislation during the 116th Congress, including 18 bills and amendments that passed the House of Representatives, and another 14 bipartisan bills that were signed into law, either as standalone bills or as part of broader legislation. Some of those pieces of legislation were included in the Johnny Isakson and David P. Roe, M.D. Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2020 (H.R. 7105), comprehensive legislation Rep. Levin led to strengthen and expand services for veterans.
Last week, Rep. Levin reintroduced his bipartisan Guard and Reserve GI Bill Parity Act of 2021 with House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Mark Takano (D-CA), Rep. Steven Palazzo (R-MS) and Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC). The bill provides parity in GI Bill benefits for members of the National Guard and Reserve who increasingly conduct similar training and missions as other servicemembers, but do not receive equal benefits.
