Rep. Mike Levin and House Select Committee on the Climate Crises Release Comprehensive Congressional Climate Action Plan
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Mike Levin (D-CA), a member of the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, released a comprehensive congressional climate action plan with his colleagues on the Select Committee. The House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis was formed at the beginning of the 116th Congress to deliver comprehensive policy recommendations to other House committees on how to solve the climate crisis, and their report is the result of more than 17 committee hearings, 700 responses to a public request for information, and over 1,000 Member and staff meetings with experts across multiple sectors of the economy. Their report includes specific proposals that would set the United States on a path to achieve net-zero carbon pollution by at least 2050, save over 60,000 lives per year due to reduced air pollution, and save nearly $8 trillion by 2050.
“The climate crisis is the defining challenge of our time, and if we fail to take aggressive action, our children and grandchildren will suffer the worst consequences,” said Rep. Levin. “With worsening droughts, heat waves, and rising sea levels in California and across the country, we must focus on solutions to the climate crisis. I’m proud to be a member of the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, offering a comprehensive plan to combat climate change, grow our economy, and protect our planet for future generations. Our report represents the broad consensus among House Democrats and the vast majority of Americans who know that we must act on climate change, and I am proud to be a part of this historic effort.”
The Select Committee’s report includes many pieces of legislation that Rep. Levin introduced, including:
- The Zero-Emission Vehicles (ZEV) Act to facilitate nationwide adoption of electric and fuel cell cars
- The Green Spaces, Green Vehicles Act to fund the installation of electric and fuel cell charging infrastructure on public lands and facilitate the conversion of Park Service and Forest Service fleets to zero emission vehicles
- The Public Lands Renewable Energy Development Act to promote renewable energy on public lands in a way that supports conservation
- The Restoring Community Input and Public Protection in Oil and Gas Leasing Act to reform the Bureau of Land Management’s oil and gas leasing program in order to strengthen public land protections and increase community participation in the program
- The Spent Fuel Prioritization Act to prioritize the removal of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) from decommissioned nuclear sites in areas with large populations and high seismic hazard
- The Desalination Development Act to authorize $260 million over the next five years for desalination projects and create new environmental safeguards for the funded projects
- The Clean Skies Act to require the Environmental Protection Agency to implement regulations that establish emission standards for greenhouse gases emitted from both new and in-service aircraft
