Rep. Mike Levin’s Statement on Presidential Immunity Decision
Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Mike Levin (CA-49) issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's decision in Trump v. United States.
“Today’s Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity severely undermines our democratic principles. Essentially, it grants any sitting president unchecked authority akin to a “dictator on day one,” allowing them to exploit official powers for personal gain without facing consequences.
“The ruling establishes presidential immunity for crimes committed in office if these actions can be plausibly justified as part of official duties, opening the door to grave abuses. A president could order the imprisonment or assassination of political rivals, accept bribes in exchange for official actions, or worse — all while shielded from accountability.
“As Justice Sotomayor pointed out in her dissent, for the first time, presidents now may believe they are immune from criminal prosecution if they abuse their power.
“Our only recourse now is through the ballot box, electing a new Congress and appointing a Supreme Court that prioritizes Constitutional integrity over personal power.”
