Rep. Mike Levin’s Statement on Vote in Opposition to the Atomic Energy Advancement Act
Washington, D.C.– Today, Rep. Mike Levin (CA-49) released the following statement regarding his vote against the Atomic Energy Advancement Act.
“Since I was elected to Congress, I’ve said that Representative is more than my job title. It’s my job description. The people of California’s 49th District sent me to Congress to find a solution to the spent nuclear fuel that has been sitting at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) for decades.
“While we continue to make good bipartisan progress on the nation’s spent nuclear fuel issues, this particular legislation, the Atomic Energy Advancement Act, does nothing to address the challenges associated with spent nuclear fuel and nuclear waste removal, or to advance a process for consent-based siting, which is why I voted against it.
“I believe that any federal effort designed to promote further nuclear energy development must also tackle the nation’s spent nuclear fuel problem. Specifically, Congress must continue to invest in consent-based solutions to address spent nuclear fuel nationwide.
“I’ll always put the needs of our constituents first. Accordingly, I’ll continue fighting for consent-based siting solutions to move spent nuclear fuel away from SONGS as quickly and safely as possible.”
