Historic Legislation Passed!
Dear Neighbor,
It was a packed week with the House making historic strides in passing legislation to secure our democracy and address racial injustice.
I also want to remind everyone once more that my top priority is still getting COVID relief to our communities so we can beat this virus and help our economy recover. Please find a few other updates from this week that you may be interested in!
The coronavirus pandemic is a crisis that requires aggressive action to save lives and livelihoods. The American Rescue Plan represents the aggressive action that the American people need, and there is a lot in this bill that is going to help you get through this pandemic.
A few things the American Rescue Plan will do:
- Provides $20 billion to strengthen vaccine distribution
- Provides nearly $130 billion to help K-12 schools reopen safely with resources for repairing ventilation systems, reducing class sizes and implementing social distancing guidelines, purchasing personal protective equipment, and hiring support staff to care for students’ health and well-being.
- Provides $1,400 checks for individuals making less than $75,000.
As the Senate finishes its work on this legislation, I recognize the urgency of passing this bill. The American people have endured this pandemic for a year – they cannot and should not have to wait any longer for more relief.
Bills Passed This Week
H.R. 1 "For The People Act"
On Wednesday we passed historic legislation to protect our democracy #ForThePeople. This bill will finally get dark money out of our politics and protect the sacred right to vote for generations to come. The passage of H.R. 1 is critical, because in a true democracy every vote and voice matters.
H.R. 1280 "George Floyd Justice in Policing Act"
I also proudly voted YES to help pass the historic #JusticeInPolicingAct. This bill takes critical steps forward by addressing racial injustice within law enforcement in America and creating real reforms to restore trust within our justice system.
In my latest podcast episode, I wrapped up the end of Black History Month with a town hall conversation with Reverend Madison Shockley, pastor of the Pilgrim United Church of Christ, to discuss our efforts to address systemic racial injustice.

The coronavirus is still here in our communities, so please remember to follow guidance from health care professionals, wash your hands, social distance, avoid large gatherings, and mask up!
