Representative Levin to Bring San Diego Dreamer as State of the Union Guest
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Mike Levin (D-CA) announced that he will bring Lucero Sanchez, a Dreamer and Environmental Science student at UC San Diego, as his guest to the State of the Union address on Tuesday. Lucero was inspired to become politically active last year after observing President Trump’s rhetoric toward immigrants and his backward policies on immigration and border security.
“Generations of immigrants have come to America from all over the world in search of freedom, safety, and a better life for their children,” said Representative Levin. “Our nation is stronger when we welcome immigrants and treat them with dignity. Instead, this president has demonized them, put them in cages, separated their families, and pushed them away. His rhetoric and actions toward immigrants is immoral and flat out wrong. I wish he could meet Lucero, my guest to the State of the Union. As a Dreamer and UCSD student who is working to make her community better, she is living proof of the enormous value that immigrants add to our country.”
“As a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient, I am not allowed to vote or work in government, but that won’t stop me from contributing to this country that I love,” said Lucero Sanchez. “While the president works to undermine immigrants and Dreamers, I am working to make my community stronger and drive civic participation among my San Diego neighbors. I am honored to be Representative Levin’s guest at the State of the Union, and I am grateful for his work to raise the voices of everyone he represents.”
Lucero served as a fellow for Blue Future, an organization dedicated to driving youth participation in electoral campaigns, and as an intern on Levin’s campaign in 2018. She is interested in pursuing a career in politics despite her DACA status and will continue to be an advocate for immigrants, women, the environment, and more. Read more about Lucero here.
