Representative Levin and Representative Thompson highlighted the importance of HR8.
Washington, D.C. - Today, Representative Mike Levin (D-CA) joined colleagues in introducing the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, a bill to institute universal background checks on all gun sales and most gun transfers, excluding family transfers and temporary transfers for hunting. The bill was introduced on the eighth anniversary of the January 8, 2011, shooting that took six lives in Tucson, Arizona, and wounded 15, including former Rep. Gabby Giffords.
“There is an epidemic of gun violence in this country, and it is long past time that we take concrete action to address it,” said Representative Levin. “I am proud to join Congressman Mike Thompson, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, and a bipartisan group of colleagues in saying enough is enough. Universal backgrounds checks are a commonsense measure that will help protect our neighborhoods and schools. While this is a significant step forward, there is much more that needs to be done, and I will continue to work with my colleagues to end the scourge of gun violence in our communities.”
Representative Levin is a longtime vocal advocate for commonsense gun safety measures and a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. He has proposed an assault weapons ban, a ban on bump stocks, and increased funding for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention research on gun violence, in addition to other gun safety measures.
