Representative Levin Statement on President Trump Shutdown Proposal

Washington, D.C. - Today, Representative Mike Levin (D-CA) issued the following statement on President Trump's shutdown proposal:

"Before we consider any immigration and border security proposal, we must first re-open the government and get federal workers the paychecks they deserve.

"President Trump's proposal only includes the most limited, temporary set of protections for Dreamers and individuals with Temporary Protected Status, not the permanent solution that is needed for Dreamers. It also still includes nearly $6 billion for the president’s wasteful, ineffective border wall, rather than smarter, more effective border security measures that I support, like increased technology at ports of entry.

"Democrats were not consulted on this proposal and it is not a compromise. I will keep an open mind to working with the president, but I am not prepared to waste billions of taxpayer dollars on a wall that won’t work. And I am not prepared to undermine Dreamers with a half-measure that doesn’t offer them the full protections they deserve."
