Big news on sand replenishment!

Dear Neighbor,

It was another productive work week here in Washington. Here are some of the highlights and updates on the latest progress we’re making for the district. Scroll down for more!

Funding for Oceanside Shoreline Study and Encinitas-Solana Beach Project

I was thrilled to announce the bipartisan infrastructure law will deliver $30.5 million in federal funding for the Encinitas-Solana Beach Coastal Storm Damage Reduction Project and $1.8 million for the Oceanside Special Shoreline Study to help protect local beaches from dangerous erosion.

Funding for the Encinitas-Solana Beach project will allow us to place more than a million cubic yards of sand along our beaches, which will reduce erosion of coastal bluffs, improve public safety, and expand all of the recreational benefits that come with larger sandy beaches. Funding for the long-delayed Oceanside Special Shoreline Study will similarly advance efforts to restore local beaches that have been negatively affected by the construction of Camp Pendleton Harbor.

After years of advocacy along with local partners to advance these projects, I’m proud the bipartisan infrastructure law is delivering crucial funding for our communities, and I’m looking forward to seeing the sand replenishment work begin soon! You can read more on this here.

Urging the Senate to Swiftly Pass VA Renaming Legislation

Image

This week, I led a letter with the California Congressional delegation urging Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee leaders to pass my bill to rename the San Diego VA Medical Center. Far too often, women do not receive the recognition they deserve for their service and sacrifice, but we have an opportunity to help change that by renaming the San Diego VA Medical Center after veteran, Army CPT Jennifer M. Moreno, a distinguished fallen soldier from our community.

We hope that they will swiftly advance H.R. 3665 to recognize these deserving women veterans and, by extension, countless veterans whose service has gone unrecognized for far too long. You can read our letter here

South Coast Water District Tunnel Project Tour

Image

I recently toured the South Coast Water District Tunnel Project in Laguna Beach. As our communities grow, infrastructure updates like this one are critical to accommodate the increase in wastewater volume and avoid risks associated with years of deterioration. This project is another great example of how the bipartisan infrastructure law will make important and long overdue improvements in the district.

A Couple More Updates:

  • I voted in support of the EVEST Act, a bill to automatically enroll transitioning servicemembers into Department of Veterans' Affairs care. It’s on us to ensure our veterans have an easy transition process into civilian life that sets them up for success long after military service.
  • Open enrollment for Covered CA ends on January 31, so don't wait to get covered. More here on how to apply for insurance.

Have a great weekend!
