Representative Levin Joins Colleagues in Introducing Legislation to Protect Dreamers and Individuals with TPS or DED Status
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Mike Levin (CA-49) joined Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40), Nydia Velazquez (NY-7), and Yvette Clarke (NY-9), to introduce the Dream and Promise Act, H.R. 6, as an original cosponsor. The bill would create a pathway to citizenship for eligible Dreamers and secure permanent residency for those with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) status.
“As the grandson of Mexican immigrants who came to America with the dream of a better future for their children, I’m proud to join my colleagues in working to protect that dream,” said Representative Levin. “For centuries, immigrants have made our country greater and more prosperous. We should welcome them and treat them with dignity instead of shutting them out like this president has tried to do. I know that the Southern California communities I represent are stronger because of the Dreamers and other immigrants who call them home, and I will continue to do everything I can to support them.”
In addition to providing a pathway to citizenship for eligible Dreamers and securing permanent residency for individuals with TPS and DED status, the bill would also repeal outdated policies that penalize states for extending rights of residency to undocumented individuals. Finally, this legislation would provide legal protections for DACA, TPS, and DED recipients to prevent deportations and ensure the rights and dignity of all living under these designations.
Last month, Representative Levin brought Lucero Sanchez, a Dreamer and environmental Science student at UC San Diego, as his guest to the State of the Union address to highlight the president’s backwards policies on immigration and border security. Lucero was inspired to become politically active last year after observing President Trump’s rhetoric toward immigrants.
